Stop it. Kurtz has gone deep seven times in just 13 games this season and is on the precipice of reaching the big leagues after being selected fourth overall in last year’s MLB Draft. The 22-year-old prodigy’s latest gargantuan homer came just a few hours after the Athletics moved Brent Rooker back into the outfield for the first time in a regular season contest since last May. Kurtz is a strong defender at the cold corner, which makes it likely that Tyler Soderstrom will transition to more of a DH and part-time catcher role to keep his bat in the lineup. He’s close.

No word yet on the severity of the injury, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the 35-year-old southpaw ultimately require a trip to the injured list. He had faced just one batter — throwing only three pitches in the eighth inning — before exiting. The A’s should have an update on his status on Monday.

He allowed nine hits, walked two and struck out two. The 11 hard-hit balls against Severino ranged from 100.9 mph to 110.0 mph. He dropped to 1-4 with a 4.70 ERA, and his strikeout rate currently stands at just 17.2%. He simply must miss more bats if he’s going to resemble a league-average starter.

It didn’t necessarily have anything to do with his exit, but Kurtz was checked on by the trainer today after jamming his glove hand into Orlando Cabrera’s body on a play at first base. His three at-bats before leaving produced two groundouts and a strikeout.

The 35-year-old slugger opened the scoring in the contest with a run-scoring double off of Zac Gallen in the opening inning. He tacked on a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning and then clobbered a 405-foot solo shot off of Joe Mantiply in the seventh inning that extended the Dodgers’ advantage to 5-0. He has been absolutely sizzling at the dish this season, slashing .376/.437/.734 with nine homers and 33 RBI. The only thing that he hasn’t done from a fantasy perspective is run, with zero stolen bases in one attempt.

Walker is quietly 20-for-65 (.307) with two home runs and 11 RBI over his last 17 games. Of course, he was hitting .156 with two home runs and four RBI in the first 21 games of the season. Still, it appears the Astros’ big free agent acquisition is finally starting to figure it out at the plate after an injury derailed his spring training and slow start to the season.

Two of the three outs that Kopech recorded in the outing came via the strikeout and he threw 10 of his 14 total pitches for strikes. His fastball touched 99.7 mph twice during the ballgame. That’s a stark contrast to Friday’s appearance in which he walked all five hitters that he faced in his first rehab outing. It’s unclear how many more tune-ups he’ll need in the minor leagues before the Dodgers feel comfortable activating him from the injured list.
