The Pirates can’t really afford to lose another catcher to injury with starter Joey Bart dealing with a back issue. Rodríguez was struck on the right hand by a pitch from ace Paul Skenes that deflected after hitting Nationals slugger James Wood in the opening frame. There should be an update on his status shortly.

McCutchen got the big hit in this one when he squeaked a ground ball up the middle that Dansby Swanson inadvertently kicked into shallow center field. That mishap allowed both Bryan Reynolds and Isiah Kiner-Falefa to score and give the Pirates a late lead that they wouldn’t relinquish. While McCutchen began the season in more of a part-time role, he’s started in 12 of Pittsburgh’s last 13 games and has slugged his way to an .826 OPS overall.

Bednar has looked like his old self lately. His fastball got up to 99 mph and he was able to command both his splitter and curveball. He’s allowed just one run and five hits to go with eight strikeouts over his last six innings since being recalled from Triple-A. It seems like the Pirates have fully reasserted him as their closer and he’s running with the job.

Mlodzinski just doesn’t have a good enough approach at this point to face a major league lineup for a third time. His fastball doesn’t miss many bats and he’s unwilling to mix his secondary pitches enough against left-handed hitters. So, it winds up being a lot of back-door sweepers against them and then hoping for the best. That’s how one winds up with a 6.58 ERA through six starts. His place in this rotation could become tenuous with some exciting pitching prospects in the Pirates’ system.

Evan in a month where Contreras didn’t exactly live up to his lofty expectations, the approach never changed. With two free passes, he’s drawn two walks in back-to-back games, and his on-base percentage is a very healthy .376 over the first 30 games of 2025. He’s also hit a decent .260 in that timeframe, but fantasy managers are still waiting to see some pop from Contreras on a more consistent basis with just three five -base hits over 107 at-bats. The pop should start showing up, as he’s far too talented a hitter to be slugging just .365 for much longer.

Realmuto had not homered since April 15, but the 34-year-old backstop took Eduardo Salazar deep to extend the Phillies lead to 7-2. He also singled to improve his slash to a still-shaky .237/.308/.361 over the first 30 games of the 2025 campaign. If not for the positional value, Realmuto would be unplayable. Because he’s a catcher, you can probably do worse. Weird how that works.

Naylor gave the Guardians a commanding four-run lead with his seventh-inning no-doubter to right field against Twins reliever Brock Stewart. The 25-year-old backstop has homered in back-to-back games and is up to four round-trippers on the season.
