The 21-year-old phenom will get a breather with tough left-hander MacKenzie Gore toeing the slab for the Nationals. Jorge Mateo will start in his place at second base and will bat ninth for the O’s on Thursday. Holliday is off to a slot start overall at the plate this season, slashing just .234/.300/.375 with a pair of homers, eight RBI, one stolen base and a 17/6 K/BB ratio in his first 70 plate appearances.

It was Morton’s first relief appearance since his rookie season in 2008. Somewhat surprisingly, the Orioles had him enter mid-inning with two outs in the second. He finished that without incident, but he gave up a walk, a single and a three-run homer in the third. He worked scoreless fourth and fifth innings afterwards and then was lifted with one on and one out in the sixth. The outing actually lowered his ERA to 10.36. Morton will probably either start or again work as a bulk guy Friday against the Royals.

Even though the changes at Camden Yards figured to help him, Mountcastle is again looking like someone in need of a trade, It might be best for everyone, since it could open room for Coby Mayo once Mayo gets hot in Triple-A. Mountcastle should be a perfectly fine major league regular, but the Orioles believe they have options just as good or better than him versus righties.

Young heads down after walking five in his shaky start of the first game of a doubleheader against the Tigers on Saturday. The Orioles could give him another shot at some point, but fantasy managers will need to see some success before considering him for a roster spot. Grant Wolfram takes his roster spot.

How brilliant of a talent Neto is that not even the Angels could mess him up. He’s 9-for-30 with three homers in eight games since returning from shoulder surgery. He started off as a No. 7 hitter in his first three games, but he’s been in the second spot the last five in a row.

Coming off a year and a half run as one of the game’s very worst players, Anderson didn’t really do much of anything to earn a spot on the Angels this spring, and it’s hard to understand why he’s playing now. If the Angels don’t believe in Paris — which is justifiable, even if his batted ball numbers this year are still pretty good overall — Kevin Newman sure figures to be the better alternative going forward. Anderson is batting .176/.222/.196 through 54 plate appearances. He has a 27 OPS+ since the beginning of last year and a 49 OPS+ since the beginning of 2023.

Tovar hit the injured list last weekend with a left hip contusion, but figures to be ready to rejoin Colorado’s lineup at some point in early May. He’s gotten off to an extremely slow start at the dish, hitting .212 (14-for-66) with zero homers, four RBI and two steals in 16 games.
