The 26-year-old outfielder can continue to play for the Rangers while on waivers. If he’s claimed, the team that claims him would have to assume the remainder of his $4.75 million salary for the 2025 season, which would be roughly $3.9 million. If he goes unclaimed, he would have the option to forfeit his remaining salary and elect free agency, or report to Triple-A Round Rock. Taveras has slashed just .241/.259/.342 in 79 at-bats for the Rangers this season with one home run, eight RBI and six stolen bases.

It wasn’t entirely a given that Carter would be the choice to replace Leody Taveras, what with the desire to keep getting Josh Smith regular at-bats and Carter not really thriving in Triple-A. Carter did turn it on during the second half of last month, but his overall line stands at .221/.333/.416 in 90 plate appearances. He offers mixed-league potential, but he doesn’t seem worth an immediate pickup.

The triple on a grounder down the first-base line was the only extra-base hit either team had today. After a nice start, Smith had slumped the last couple of weeks, but he still seems locked into regular at-bats for the foreseeable future. He’s back up to .311/.386/.478 after this.

DeGrom settled for three strikeouts today, though he had 11 whiffs and a 30% CSW. It’s the fourth time in seven turns this year that he’s allowed one or no runs, and he’s now 2-1 with a 2.61 ERA. He’s slated to face the Tigers in his next start.

Harris is striking out less than usual, and Statcast thinks he should have a significantly better line than his current .214/.232/.328, but there just hasn’t been a lot of hard contact in the air there. It seemed like he was getting it together in the second half of April, but now he’s 1-for-19 in his last five games. The one bit of good news for those rostering him is that he’s stealing more bases than usual; he’s 7-for-8 right now after going 10-for-16 in 110 games last year.

The positive news here for fantasy managers is that Varsho’s absence isn’t related to the offseason shoulder procedure. The 28-year-old center fielder will sit out Sunday’s series finale at the Rogers Centre, but figures to have a decent shot at being ready for Tuesday’s showdown against the Angels out in Los Angeles. It’ll be Nathan Lukes shifting over to patrol center field on Sunday with rookie Alan Roden entering the lineup in left field.
