Campbell’s third-inning blast against Rays emerging ace Shane Baz left his bat at 104.5 mph and cleared everything out beyond the left-field fence at George M. Steinbrenner Field. It was his third big fly of the year. The 22-year-old rookie was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dismal series opener as the Red Sox mustered just one run on five hits and lost for the sixth time in their last 10 games since April 6. Not good.

Bregman took Blue Jays starter Yariel Rodríguez deep in the opening frame for his seventh big fly of the season. It was his lone hit in four at-bats. The 31-year-old third baseman has been sizzling-hot at the dish of late, batting .383 (23-for-60) with five homers and 12 RBI over his last 15 games.

Giolito retired 11 consecutive batters at one point during his long-awaited Boston debut before the Blue Jays finally got to him with two outs in the sixth when Alejandro Kirk and Daulton Varsho connected for back-to-back homers. He threw 61 of 90 pitches for strikes, finishing with a robust 33 percent CSW. He displayed some impressive precision and command of his arsenal, leaning heavily on his fastball/changeup combination. He’s worthy of a speculative roster spot in all fantasy formats. He’ll square off against the Rangers on Tuesday in his next outing.

Bernardino will be away from Boston for at least a day, with a chance to miss a couple more while taking care of something more important than the sport of baseball. The Red Sox activated Lucas Giolito off the injured list in the corresponding transaction.

The Mets called on Waddell for the spot-appearance as they’re in the midst of a 26 games in 27 days stretch and he performed as well as anyone could have hoped. He followed opener Huascar Brazobán the funky, left-handed Waddell was lethal over his 60-pitch outing. He retired the final eight batters he faced and forced a swing-and-miss with all five of his pitches. Those five pitches all got some real use too, as he threw each at least 12% of the time and he looked passable as a spot-starter.

Rivas figures to be a lineup fixture in Seattle for the near future. He’s yet to pick up an extra-base hit, but he’s 11-for-30 with nine walks, giving him a .513 OBP. He’s also 3-for-3 stealing bases.
