    Rafael Devers

    Rafael Devers

    BOS • DH • #

Rafael Devers told reporters on Thursday that he is not willing to play first base.

Devers vented his frustration with general manager Craig Breslow, telling reporters including Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic that he doesn’t understand why the team would want him to change positions again after they already asked him to do so during spring training. Perhaps he’s unaware that first baseman Triston Casas suffered a brutal season-ending knee injury and they don’t have any viable replacements. Regardless, this isn’t the type of comment that’s going to gain him any respect or admiration in the clubhouse or the front office.

Rafael Devers went 2-for-3 with a homer, two RBI, a walk and a steal as the Red Sox topped the Rangers 5-0 on Thursday.

    Recap

Brayan Bello blanked the Rangers for 4 2/3 innings on Thursday.

Bello allowed four hits, walked five and struck out only one, but he kept escaping. Even so, manager Alex Cora didn’t trust him to pitch out a fifth-inning jam with the Red Sox up 3-0. Justin Slaten took over with two on and two outs after a walk to Joc Pederson and got Adolis García to ground out to end the threat. Bello remained 2-0 with a 2.01 ERA. He’s struck out 13 and walked 12 in 22 1/3 innings. It’s likely that he’ll face the Tigers next.

    Recap

Ceddanne Rafaela went 2-for-2 with a double and a walk versus the Rangers on Thursday.

Rafaela’s balls in play today left the bat at 105.6 and 104.2 mph, upping his season hard-hit rate to 46%. He’s also made big gains with his 17.6 percent strikeout rate and 6.4 percent walk rate. (He came in at 26.4 percent and 2.6 percent, respectively, as a rookie). His .239/.298/.345 line obviously isn’t great, but everything else is trending in the right direction.

    Recap

Shohei Ohtani hit a solo homer in the ninth in a loss to the Diamondbacks on Thursday.

Ohtani is now up to 11 homers on the season. This one came in the ninth inning, but it came with the Dodgers trailing by three runs. Still counts. That homer gives him 16 RBI on the season and a .296/.405/.627 slash. Decent.

    Yordan Alvarez

Astros manager Joe Espada said, “Hopefully we get [Yordan] back in the next week or so.”

Espada said this was an issue that Yordan has dealt with before, and it’s a good thing that the Astros “jumped on the issue early. Let it heal, time off, and get the real Yordan soon.” Yordan is eligible to be activated off the injured list on Monday, but it seems like later in the week may be a more realistic timeline.

    Injury

Astros manager Joe Espada told reporters that “hopefully” they’ll get Yordan Alvarez (hand) back in the next “week or so.”

Espada said the muscle strain in Alvarez’s right hand is something he’s dealt with before, and it’s a good thing that the Astros “jumped on the issue early. Let it heal, time off, and get the real Yordan soon.” Alvarez is eligible to be activated off the injured list on Monday, but it seems like later in the week may be a more realistic timeline.
