The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey reports Red Sox owner John Henry flew to Kansas City and met with disgruntled franchise player Rafael Devers on Friday.

McCaffrey adds that Red Sox CEO Sam Kennedy and president of baseball operations Craig Breslow also made the trip to Kansas City. She also notes that Henry, with manager Alex Cora present at the time, was the only one to speak with Devers. The sit down comes just a few days after the 28-year-old slugger publicly expressed his disagreement and frustration with the team, singling out Breslow specifically, for asking him to play first base in the wake of Triston Casas’ season-ending knee injury. It’s a highly unusual situation for a team owner to make an unplanned trip to speak with a player. Breslow told reporters late Friday that there was a “productive conversation” while refusing to elaborate any further. It’s in the best interest of the Red Sox to repair a seemingly fractured relationship with their most important hitter, and expedite his seemingly inevitable move to first base, so it’s a positive sign there’s a real effort being made on those fronts.

    Recap

Garrett Crochet limited the Royals to one run in seven innings and struck out nine in Boston’s 10-1 victory Saturday.

Crochet had some of his best stuff tonight, particularly when it came to his cutter; he averaged 92.5 mph with the pitch, up from 90.3 mph on average this season. He wound up getting 18 missed swings, and all but one of the seven hits he allowed was a single. Crochet is now 4-2 with a 1.93 ERA. He’ll face the Braves next, and he’ll probably be matched up with Chris Sale, which should be fun.

    Recap

Rafael Devers finished 4-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a walk in the rout of the Royals on Saturday.

Controversy and fan anger doesn’t seem to be taking any sort of toll on Devers. He’s 23-for-56 with four homers, 15 RBI and an 11/9 K/BB in his last 14 games, raising his OPS from .657 to .858.

    Carlos Narváez

    Recap

Carlos Narváez went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and a walk Saturday against the Royals.

The Red Sox are trying to ease Connor Wong back into action as he returns from a broken finger, but the truth is that Narváez deserves to be the team’s starting catcher right now. He’s the better defender of the two, and he’s done a nice job offensively in hitting .245/.304/.426 with four homers and 13 RBI in 102 plate appearances.

    Recap

TJ Friedl went 3-for-4 with two walks and three runs scored in the Reds’ 13-9 defeat of the Astros on Saturday.

The Reds scored 10 runs in the first and then held on for dear life as the Astros did their best to come back. The five times on base raised Friedl’s OBP to .360, and he’s scored 23 runs in 38 games. He’ll be a fine choice in mixed leagues next week with the Reds home for six games against the White Sox and Guardians.

    Eric Wagaman

    Recap

Eric Wagaman delivered a tiebreaking two-run triple in the eighth as the Marlins topped the White Sox 3-1 on Saturday.

Wagaman’s big hit came an inning after Kyle Stowers tied the game with a solo homer. Wagaman came into the night in an 8-for-46 slump that had dropped his OPS to .648. Still, he built up enough goodwill early that he’s gotten a chance to ride it out. He’s not a mixed-league guy, but he’ll probably rate as one of the Marlins’ better hitters as long as he continues to play.

    Joc Pederson

    Recap

After 33 games without a long ball, Joc Pederson finally got on the board with a two-run homer off the Tigers’ Jack Flaherty on Saturday.

It also doubled his RBI count of the year. Pederson had been showing signs of pulling out of his slump over the last 10-14 days. It might not happen all at once now, but he’s certainly worth considering in 12-team and deeper leagues and in all leagues that count OBP instead of average.
