Katz spent the last five years as the White Sox’s pitching coach before being dropped earlier in the offseason. He’ll be replacing Bill Murphy in Houston after Murphy left to go to Pittsburgh, and he’ll presumably work in tandem with fellow pitching coach Joshua Miller. MLB.com’s Brian McTaggert says fellow hitting coach Troy Snitker. is also out. Cintrón and Snitker spent the last seven years sharing duties for what has typically been one of the league’s best offenses. That changed this year with Kyle Tucker gone and Yordan Alvarez being limited to 48 games. The Astros ended up scoring 4.23 runs per game, placing them 21st in the majors.

McTaggart adds that both are under contract for next season and any speculation regarding the immediate future in Houston can be put to bed entering a critical offseason for the franchise. Espada guided the Astros to an 87-75 record in his second season at the helm, despite an avalanche of injuries to the pitching side of the ledger. Brown has been at the helm for the past three seasons with Houston missing the postseason this year for the first time since 2016. He’ll oversee a transitional phase for the organization as they try to navigate forward with an aging core and some up-and-coming talent, mostly on the positional side.
