The cost of contending for championships has gotten steeper, especially with the salary cap rules instituted in recent years. For the Celtics, the Achilles tendon rupture suffered by Jayson Tatum may impact how the front office approaches this offseason. If the team decides that a group that won’t have Tatum for most of the season can’t be a factor in the East, the decision could be made to shed salary. And Hauser, whose four-year, $45 million extension goes into effect next season, may be a prime candidate to be moved. “Hauser, to me, is the most likely candidate to go, just because you have (Baylor) Scheierman there to effectively fill his role,” Mannix said. “I think they’d love to find a home for Jrue Holiday, just because of the contract and where they are as a team. (Kristaps) Porzingis, who knows? I don’t think they want to take on contracts that go on longer than Porzingis’ deal, but he’s certainly available.” Hauser being traded would make Scheierman worth a look in deep fantasy leagues next season.

While in Boston for the release of his signature sneaker, Brown said that he still has not decided on surgery to repair the partially torn meniscus in his right knee. “l got a lot of doctors I gotta get evaluated with — see the potential for surgery versus no surgery, wait to speak to the [Celtics] organization,” Brown said, according to Celtics Blog. “For now, it’s just rest and recovery. I’m taking a step back from a long season. Mentally, it was a lot of stuff going on.” With Jayson Tatum (Achilles) expected to miss a significant portion of the 2025-26 season, a healthy Brown would be Boston’s first scoring option if management keeps the roster intact.

This isn’t exactly a revelation to those who closely followed Brown throughout the season. It was obvious the 28-year-old small forward was playing through some knee pain for the last month of the regular season and playoffs. The Celtics star had received multiple injections in his knee to deal with the pain. Brown will be evaluated in the coming week to determine if surgery is needed. Depending on the course of action on Brown’s knee, the Celtics could be down another star with Jayson Tatum already having had surgery to repair a torn Achilles.

The Pacers’ bench outscored the Thunder’s 30-11 in the first half of Game 3, which Indiana led by four at halftime, and Mathurin was a big part of that. The 22-year-old small forward’s 27 points were the third most off the bench in NBA Finals history. Mathurin joined Jason Terry and Manu Ginobili as the only bench players to have at least 25 points in an NBA Finals game in the last 25 years. Even more impressive was that Mathurin played only 22 minutes and took just 12 shots. His +16 in his time on the court was a game-high. It was an exceptional effort from the Pacers’ No. 6 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.

After shooting 6-of-19 from the field in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, Williams was better in Sunday’s victory. While the percentage still has room for growth, J-Dub attempted nine free throws after getting just four on Thursday. Add in the rebounds and assists, and Williams managed to bring more to the table following his disappointing Finals debut. Oklahoma City outscored Indiana by a 33-21 margin in the second quarter, and Williams was a factor, shooting 3-of-6 from the field and scoring nine points. That’s the level of offensive aggression the Thunder will need J-Dub to bring to the table consistently if they’re to win the series. Game 3 is on Wednesday in Indianapolis.

Indiana dominated on the glass in this game, but it wasn’t just because of the bigs. Nesmith was the leading rebounder in this game and was one of three Pacers to grab at least 10 rebounds. However, they lost the turnover battle 24-6, and Nesmith contributed five of those. The only player with more was Myles Turner, who coughed it up six times. Indiana won this game and still has things to clean up, which is an encouraging sign for them moving forward in this series.
