It was a night that started with promise and ended in a lopsided defeat. The Cleveland Guardians fell 8-2 to the Oakland Athletics on Saturday, undone by a late-game power surge from the visitors and an offense that couldn't get anything going beyond a single swing from its superstar. The bullpen, typically a source of strength, faltered late, leaving fans at Progressive Field heading for the exits early.
José Ramírez is now 6-for-14 with four home runs in his career against Athletics starter Luis Severino.
For five innings, it was a ballgame. Starter Logan Allen did his job, limiting the A's to three runs over 5 1/3 innings and keeping Cleveland within striking distance. But the final frames were a different story. The bullpen imploded, beginning with Nic Enright, who was recalled from Triple-A earlier in the day. He surrendered a two-run shot to Shea Langeliers in the eighth. Kolby Allard followed in the ninth and was greeted with back-to-back homers from Jacob Wilson and Nick Kurtz, putting the game far out of reach. It was a stunning and decisive collapse.
If you're looking for a silver lining, it's José Ramírez. He provided all of Cleveland's offense with one swing, launching a two-run homer in the third inning to briefly give the Guardians life. The blast was his 19th of the season and continued his career-long dominance of A's starter Luis Severino. Unfortunately, that was the extent of the offensive output, as the Guardians managed just one other hit all night.
With Saturday's loss, the focus immediately shifts to avoiding a series defeat. The Guardians will send right-hander Gavin Williams (5-4, 3.70 ERA) to the mound for the rubber match. He'll face A's lefty Jeffrey Springs (8-6, 3.93 ERA) in a critical start. The team also made a roster move before the game, sending shortstop Gabriel Arias to Triple-A Columbus for a rehab assignment to make room for Enright. Now, they'll need Williams to be the stopper and the bats to wake up to get back on track.
This loss stings, especially given the team's recent success against Oakland. But baseball is a game of short memories. A strong start from Gavin Williams and a bounce-back performance from the lineup on Sunday can wash away the bitter taste of this defeat and secure a series win.
