What a way to cap a weekend! The Baltimore Orioles sent the Los Angeles Angels packing with an emphatic 11-2 victory on Sunday, completing a three-game sweep at Camden Yards. The Birds unleashed a torrent of offense, highlighted by a massive grand slam from Gary Sánchez that blew the game wide open and sent the home crowd into a frenzy.
It was Gary Sánchez's sixth career grand slam, his first as an Oriole, and it was the exclamation point on a day the offense simply could not be stopped.
The game's turning point came in a dramatic seventh inning. With the O's clinging to a 5-2 lead, the Angels loaded the bases with just one out. Manager Brandon Hyde called on Seranthony Domínguez, who delivered one of the gutsiest performances of the season. Domínguez faced down the threat, striking out Jo Adell and pinch-hitter LaMonte Wade Jr. to escape the jam unscathed. The energy from that escape carried right into the bottom of the frame. The Orioles loaded the bases themselves, and Gary Sánchez stepped to the plate. 'The Kraken' unleashed a monstrous blast, sending a grand slam into the left-field seats. It was his first slam since August 2023 and it turned a tight game into a laugher.
While Sánchez provided the biggest blow, he was far from the only Oriole doing damage. The power party started early, with Ramón Urías launching a two-run homer in the first inning to give the O's an early lead. Jordan Westburg put the final nail in the coffin with a two-run shot of his own in the eighth. In total, the Orioles racked up 12 hits, with Sánchez (5 RBIs), Urías, and Westburg all enjoying multi-hit games. Contributions came from up and down the lineup, including an RBI double from Coby Mayo and an RBI single from Ramón Laureano, showcasing the kind of deep, relentless offense this team is capable of.
On the pitching side, a huge story was the performance of Cade Povich. Making his first-ever MLB appearance out of the bullpen, the young lefty was simply brilliant. After opener Scott Blewett was tagged for two runs, Povich entered the game and completely stabilized things. He tossed 3.2 shutout innings, allowing just three hits while striking out four. His command was sharp, and he kept the Angels' hitters off balance, earning his first win since April (2-5). It was a massive confidence boost for Povich and a promising sign for the flexibility of the Orioles' pitching staff.
With their third sweep in the last five series, the Orioles are officially hot. Now at 30-40, they've clawed their way to within 10 games of .500 for the first time since mid-May. The dominance over the Angels (20-6 since 2022) continues, but more importantly, the team is showing a swagger and resilience that was missing earlier in the season. With the offense firing on all cylinders and pitchers like Povich stepping up in key moments, the Birds are building serious momentum as they look to keep climbing.
