Pallante struck out three and walked two. Andrew McCutchen was actually responsible for those two walks and the lone hit; everyone else in the Pirates lineup combined to go 0-for-20 while Pallante was in the game. Alas, it was still scoreless when Pallante’s night came to an end, and Phil Maton went on to give up a run in the eighth. Pallante, now sporting a 4.10 ERA, probably won’t pitch again until next Tuesday against the Nationals, as the Cardinals have two off days coming up.

Donovan’s home run stood as the Cardinals only hit in this game until Jon Berti came in to pitch the ninth inning. They were down by seven runs in the blink of an eye and never put up a fight. An incredible start to the season by Donovan gave way to a rough June where he only had a .626 OPS.

The phrase “taking your lumps” was invented for games like this one. Mikolas gave up four home runs to the first seven batters of the game and six long balls in total. The Cubs teed off on him and there wasn’t a single moment where they didn’t seem comfortable in the box and ready to attack. Mikolas will take an ugly 5.26 ERA into his next scheduled start against the Nationals.
