Angel Martinez swatted a solo homer in the Guardians’ win over the Astros on Wednesday.

Martinez gave the Guardians an early 1-0 lead with a solo homer off Brandon Walter in the first inning. The 23-year-old is slashing a less-than-desirable .238/.264/.381 in 2025, but there have been enough good moments — including seven homers — to suggest that he can be a useable fantasy option in the coming years.

The 24-year-old slugger had been away from the team since Monday. He returns to a .217/.289/.429 with 13 homers and 33 RBI through his first 284 plate appearances on the season. Jhonkensy Noel was optioned back to Triple-A Columbus in a corresponding move on Thursday.

Byron Buxton (hand) returned to the Twins’ starting lineup for Friday night’s showdown against Paul Skenes and the Pirates.

Buxton was pulled from Wednesday’s contest after he was drilled by a pitch on his left hand. Fortunately, X-rays came back for any fractures though and after a day off on Thursday he’s ready to return to his regular spot atop the Pirates’ lineup on Friday evening. The All-Star outfielder is slashing a terrific .270/.338/.544 with 20 homers, 53 RBI and 17 stolen bases (in 17 attempts) through his first 75 games this season.

Astros placed OF Jake Meyers on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to July 10, with a right calf strain.

The 29-year-old outfielder suffered the injury during pregame warmups on Wednesday. While it sounded initially like something he would be able to play through, the Astros are going to do the smart thing and sit him down through the weekend to ensure that it gets right. He should be ready to return shortly after the All-Star break.

Julio Rodríguez announced that he will not take part in the 2025 All Star Game.

Rodríguez was a bit of a surprise inclusion to the game, but the metrics suggest he’s been one of the best outfielders in the American League because of his defense and wheels. The 24-year-old released a statement that said that decision was made to take care of his body and “fully prepare” for the second half of the 2025 season. A replacement should be announced shortly.
