After drawing a walk in the second, Rice led off the fifth with a base hit before coming around to score on a single. Leading off once again in the sixth, he took Lou Trivino deep for a solo homer to extend the Yankees lead. The 26-year-old first baseman has been a surprise breakout in the early going, slashing .310/.431/.690 with four homers, 11 runs scored, and a pair of steals across 51 plate appearances.

Fried did his part in striking out nine today, but he had no margin for error with the Yankees getting blanked by the Red Sox. It’s the 13th time in his last 14 starts that Fried has allowed two runs or fewer. He’ll face the Orioles on Friday.

He fanned three times once last weekend in Yankee Stadium and did so in all three games in Boston this this weekend. His average is down to .378, which is still incredible but is his lowest mark since Apr. 15.

Yelich had totaled two singles in 11 at-bats since returning Thursday from a bruised right wrist suffered on a HBP, but he hit the ball hard today, with his homer leaving the bat at 108.2 mph and his double checking in at 102.3. The double was just his sixth in 288 plate appearances this season.
