Scherzer returns to take the ball on Wednesday night against the Guardians for his first big-league start since March 29. The 40-year-old future Hall of Fame righty threw 75 pitches in his final minor league rehab start, so there shouldn’t be a governor on his workload right out of the gate. The durability concerns aren’t going anywhere, but Scherzer offers some immediate streaming appeal for fantasy managers, even in shallow mixed leagues.

It wound up being a brief shutdown for Varsho after experiencing some renewed hamstring soreness while running the bases over the weekend. The 28-year-old outfielder underwent a precautionary MRI earlier this week that didn’t reveal any structural damage. He should be ready to start a minor league rehab assignment at some point in the coming days.

The move comes as a mild surprise given Turnbull is a prominent name with plenty of big-league experience, but there’s no role for him in Toronto anymore with Eric Lauer pitching well and Max Scherzer returning from the injured list. The 32-year-old veteran leaves the Blue Jays after struggling to a disastrous 7.11 ERA across 6 1/3 innings (three appearances, one start). There might be some interest on waivers given his previous track record.

Piña was designated for assignment by the Marlins over the weekend after posting a 3.47 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and a 54/15 K/BB ratio in 57 innings at Triple-A Jacksonville. The Blue Jays view him as a potential bulk reliever option and organizational depth and will send him to Triple-A Buffalo to start. They parted with Colby Martin, who is a 24-year-old reliever in High-A and was not on the 40-man roster.
