It’s notable that Atkins didn’t outright dismiss the possibility that last year’s first-round selection could wind up pitching in the majors at some point in the second half. Yesavage’s meteoric rise hasn’t slowed down at all since being promoted earlier this month to Double-A New Hampshire as he’s allowed just five runs with a 16/8 K/BB ratio over 11 2/3 innings in three starts. The dynamic 21-year-old has compiled a sparkling 2.45 ERA and 104/27 K/BB ratio across 62 1/3 innings (14 starts) this season for three different minor-league teams.

The double failed to produce any of the runs batted in; he had an RBI groundout in the fifth and then a two-run single an inning later. The single would have been gloved by Jazz Chisholm Jr. at third if it was just a mere regular hard-hit ball, but Guerrero smoked the grounder at 115.7 mph.

Scherzer was lifted after just 71 pitches, and the Jays reported after the game that he was dealing with fatigue in his troublesome thumb. It sounds like he’ll probably make his next start on time, but it’s very clear the thumb is going to remain an issue going forward, and between the early exits and maybe a maintenance IL stint at some point, he might not be worth the hassle in mixed leagues, even though he’s throwing pretty well; he averaged 93.6 mph with his fastball tonight and wound up with a nice 34% CSW.

Hoffman allowed a single and struck out one in a 22-pitch ninth. He also earned a save Sunday against the Red Sox, so he’ll probably need Tuesday off. Yariel Rodríguez might wind up with a save then.

Alexander winds up losing his spot on New York’s 40-man roster with the club signing journeyman reliever Geoff Hartlieb to replace an injured Fernando Cruz (oblique) ahead of Monday’s critical showdown against the Blue Jays. He figures to pass through waivers unclaimed and remain with the Yankees as organizational depth.

Smith extended the Dodgers lead with a solo homer off Steven Cruz in the sixth inning. It was the tenth of the season for the 30-year-old backstop. He’s slashing .318/.413/.532 with 40 runs scored and 43 RBI across 264 plate appearances.
