Phillies recalled RHP Alan Rangel from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Rangel joins Philadelphia’s relief mix ahead of Sunday night’s series finale against the Mets as additional long relief insurance. The 27-year-old righty allowed two runs over three innings back on June 6 in his big-league debut.

Phillies optioned RHP Michael Mercado to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Mercado retreats to the minors after allowing five runs over three innings (three appearances) in the big leagues since the start of June. He’ll likely return at some point later this summer as middle relief depth.

Phillies RHP prospect Andrew Painter allowed two runs over five innings on Saturday for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Painter struck out five and also handed out four free passes. The most encouraging development here is that the 22-year-old top prospect was hitting 99 mph in this outing and the stuff remains borderline elite. The results haven’t quite matched the hype in recent weeks, but that shouldn’t dampen enthusiasm for his impending arrival. There’s a path to starts with the Phillies at some point in the second half, but the front office is probably just fine with letting him continue to iron things out on the doorstep of the majors for now.

Brice Turang went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run against the Twins on Sunday.

Matt McLain went 1-for-4 with a solo home run against the Cardinals on Sunday.

McLain’s home run was his ninth of the year. The 25-year-old second baseman hit a solo shot off Miles Mikolas in the first inning. McLain now has hits in 10 consecutive games and is 13-for-34 (.382) with two home runs and five RBI over that time. His season average is still an ugly .209, but McLain hit .154 in his first 21 games and is hitting a more palatable .236 over his last 47 games.

Jeff McNeil is not in the Mets’ starting lineup for Sunday night’s showdown against the Phillies.

McNeil will get a rare night off with tough opposing southpaw Jesús Luzardo toeing the slab for the Phillies. Luisangel Acuna will start in his place at second base and will bat ninth for the Mets on Sunday evening in Philadelphia.
