The fastball velocity was there, and there were no reports of an injury, so this was simply a bad start for Chandler. At some point, you have to wonder if the lack of promotion is impacting him mentally. After cruising through the early parts of the season and absolutely earning the right to pitch MLB innings, Chandler has struggled with his command of late. In his last seven starts, he has issued 19 walks and hit three batters in 26 innings. Chandler had just an 8.6 percent walk rate last season and didn’t have control issues at the start of the year, so it’s fair to wonder if the 22-year-old is either frustrated or is trying too hard to impress and force his promotion that he has begun over-throwing.

Davis’s two balls in play today were hit 103.3 and 108.0 mph. The first was a 373-foot flyout, but his double in the eighth barely missed being a homer. He came around to score on a fielder’s choice afterwards to break a scoreless tie. He later walked in the 10th, when the Pirates scored the go-ahead run on a double-play ball from Oneil Cruz. Joey Bart is nearly ready to return from a concussion, so Davis is set to return to a backup role within the next couple of days.

The Cubs couldn’t break through against Skenes, but they did at least make him throw 95 pitches in five innings. Alas, getting him out of the game only did so much good, as they were limited to one run afterwards, and the Pirates won in extras to improve to 7-8 in Skenes’s starts. Skenes himself remained 4-6 after departing a scoreless game. He’s allowed one or no runs in seven straight starts, yet he’s 1-2 during that span.

Needing to strand the automatic runner, Bednar got Ian Happ to ground out, Kyle Tucker to pop out and Seiya Suzuki to ground out to end it. He’s up to nine straight scoreless appearances now, and in spite of his Triple-A exile in April, he stands poised to be one of the most popular players at this year’s trade deadline.
