The lack of useful options in Horton’s repertoire has come back to bite him a bit during his last few starts. Here, he got caught struggling to spot his changeups against left-handed batters. That’s the only pitch he usually has for them besides his fastball and a smattering of curveballs. So, he got caught in a few too many long at-bats which drove up his pitch count. Horton wound up hanging a 1-2 sweeper in the heart of the plate to Matt Wallner which he crushed for a home run. Still, he managed to force an impressive 19 swings-and-misses and at least three with four different pitches. The stuff is there, Horton just needs more refinement. That should come with time.

Happ will get a rare breather with tough left-hander Carlos Rodon toeing the slab for the Yankees. Justin Turner will slide into the lineup as the designated hitter to replace him and will bat seventh for the Cubs on Friday evening.

Crow-Armstrong, who went 0-for-8 in the first two games of the series, had a 414-foot homer off Chris Paddack in the third and a 425-foot homer of Anthony Misiewicz in the seventh. It’s his sixth two-homer game, five of which have come this year. He’s up to 25 homers overall, which is tied with teammate Seiya Suzuki for sixth in the majors, and he’s the only player in the league with 20 homers and 20 steals (27, in his case) so far.

Any team could have had Rea at a reasonable $5.5 million when he was on waivers in November, but no one jumped, and the Cubs eventually signed him for $5 million. He’s since put together a nice first half at 7-3 with a 3.91 ERA. His peripherals have never been great, but he’s allowed two runs or fewer in 10 of his 15 starts.
