    Cam Smith

    Cam Smith

    HOU • RF • #

Cam Smith had three hits and three RBI in the loss to the Rockies on Thursday.

The big one was a two-run triple that tied the game in the seventh. In truth, though, that was just an 80-mph fly that should have been caught by either the left fielder or the center fielder. Brenton Doyle, though, appeared to be worried about the possibility of a collision and came up short on a diving attempt. Smith, who we promise actually does hit the ball hard quite often, also had a 70-mph double and an 81-mph single in this one. His average is all of the way up to .291.

    Recap

Brandon Walter surrendered five runs in five innings Thursday in a no-decision against the Rockies at Coors Field.

Walter was better than the line suggests; he gave up eight hits, but just two of his 19 balls in play had xBAs over .500. The big blow, a two-run homer by Thairo Estrada, left the bat at all of 96 mph and wouldn’t have carried nearly as far anywhere else. Walter walked none and struck out three. He should be a decent option in mixed leagues at home against the Guardians next week.

    Jeremy Peña

    Injury

Astros general manager Dana Brown told reporters that Jeremy Peña could resume baseball activities this weekend.

Peña was placed on the injured list retroactive to June 28 with a fractured rib before Monday’s game, and it’s a positive development that he could resume activities only a week later. The 27-year-old will almost assuredly be out through the All-Star break, but a return shortly after that break can’t be ruled out just yet.

    Chas McCormick

    Injury

Chase McCormick (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday.

McCormick has been out since the start of June with his oblique strain. The 30-year-old was not getting consistent playing time prior to the injury, and it seems unlikely that role will change even with the gluttony of injuries Houston has dealt with that could have opened up the depth chart. He should be able to come off the IL near the All-Star break if there are no setbacks.

Dodgers designated OF Steward Berroa for assignment.

The 26-year-old outfielder was plucked from the Blue Jays for cash considerations after he had been designated for assignment in mid-May. On the season, Berroa has hit .270/.358/.345 with just one homer, 15 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 205 plate appearances at the Triple-A level.

    Recap

Matt Wallner hit a solo homer in a loss for the Twins on Thursday to the Marlins.

Wallner was responsible for the only run of the game for Minnesota, as he took Cade Gibson deep in the seventh inning. He’s now gone deep eight times with 14 RBI, and it’s worth remembering that those numbers have come in just 47 games and 151 at-bats.

    Adolis García

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports that Adolis García “could emerge as a rather interesting trade candidate” this season.

Rosenthal mentions that the limited number of right-handed hitters on the trade market could make García an attractive option, especially since he’s under team control next season as well. With the Rangers falling out of contention, García could be the team’s most valuable trade chip. Rosenthal believes that, “As long as he continues producing offensively, his trade value would be greater at the deadline than during the offseason or at next year’s deadline.”
