The 24-year-old right-hander retired all three hitters that he faced in order, including a punchout, and needed just 14 pitches (nine strikes) to get the job done. He’ll probably need at least one additional outing there, and if he looks as sharp as he did on Friday night it seems likely that he’ll be cleared to join the Cubs’ bullpen.

Horton outlasted Paul Skenes by two-thirds of an inning before exiting a scoreless game. He has been helped by a really easy schedule to date, but the stuff is very good and his control has been better than expected. He has a 3.41 ERA and a 29/8 K/BB over 36 1/3 innings, and he’s due to face the Mariners next.

A rough day against Paul Skenes is no cause for alarm, but Shaw has now had three hitless games in a row and has managed just two singles and one walk in 23 plate appearances over his last six games. The Cubs aren’t about to go back to Jon Berti and Vidal Brujan at third, but if Shaw continues to struggle to hit the ball hard, acquiring a stopgap in July might be an option.

The 24-year-old southpaw had been pitching for the Mississippi Mud Monsters in the independent Frontier League where he registered a 3.86 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and a 29/3 K/BB ratio across 16 1/3 innings in his nine appearances. He’ll add bullpen depth in the minor leagues for the Rockies.

Contreras doubled in a run in the fourth, and he was able to give the Brewers a 2-1 lead in the sixth with a sac fly. It’s been a disappointing season for Contreras even before you consider the lofty expectations, as he’s still slashing just .239/.346/.340. It’s reasonable — if not probable — that Contreras will pick things up over the second half of 2025.
