Solid again, Holmes has impressively asserted himself as a legitimate starting pitcher through the first half of this season. Yet, he was pulled a bit surprisingly after just five innings of work and 79 pitches here. His velocity dipped a good bit during that fifth inning and the Mets would likely want to manage his workload a tad given since he’s already thrown more innings than he has in any major league season to this point since he’s working as a starter again. Of course, the Mets’ bullpen promptly coughed up their four run lead in the following inning. Be on the lookout for Holmes’ fastball velocity as he continues to work through his transition and whether or not the Mets continue to limit him around 80 pitches, just like they did here. Also, after not allowing a home run through his first seven starts of the season, he’s now given nine in his last seven starts. His next is scheduled to come on the road against the Braves.

That’d seem to set up Raley to return right after the All-Star break if things go well. Raley had a 2.80 ERA in 54 2/3 innings for the Mets in 2023 and pitched seven scoreless innings last year before getting hurt, so he could turn into a key piece of the pen if he’s right.

The second single was a bunt by Nolan Gorman, putting the tying run on second base and the go-ahead run on first. Megill, though, fanned Jordan Walker, Victor Scott II and Masyn Winn afterwards. It’s the first time since Apr. 2 that he’s struck out three in an inning.

Canning gave up four hits, walked five and struck out two. The 29-year-old right-hander was done in by free passes as he allowed walks that ultimately came around to score in the second, third and fifth innings. Canning walked two in the fifth inning and was removed from the game, but both runners scored on Jonathan Aranda’s double. He’s allowed 10 runs in his last two starts and walked at least four batters in three of his last five starts. It doesn’t get easier for Canning as he’s lined up to face the Phillies on the road next weekend.
