Hoerner led off the third inning with a single off of Michael McGreevy and scored on Kyle Tucker’s two-run single. The 28-year-old infielder then launched his first home run of the season — a 364-foot (97.0 mph EV) two-run shot off of Steven Matz in the sixth inning — which pulled the Cubs to within a run at 8-7. That would be as close as they would get. With his three-hit attack, Hoerner is now slashing .294/.335/.370 with the aforementioned one long ball, 33 RBI and 15 stolen bases.

Yikes. The 33-year-old hurler punched out three batters on the night while issuing a pair of walks. The Cardinals got to him early and often in this one, as Lars Nootbaar belted a two-run homer in the second inning, Masyn Winn launched a two-run shot in the third and Nolan Gorman took him deep in the fourth inning. Taillon got seven whiffs on 81 pitches on the evening, posting a CSW of 30 percent. He’ll try to pick up the pieces as he carries a 4.47 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and a 70/19 K/BB ratio (90 2/3 innings) into Sunday’s matchup against the Astros in Houston.
