This seemed like a foregone conclusion with Ildemaro Vargas fracturing his ankle on Tuesday. Alexander has hit .284/.413/.479 in 54 games at Triple-A with eight home runs, 11 steals, and a 59/38 K/BB ratio. He has primarily played third base for Reno, but has also appeared in plenty of games at shortstop and a few at second base as well, so he will likely fill a role as a reserve infielder while he’s up in Arizona.

Suárez expressed confidence that he’ll return to Arizona’s lineup for Friday’s series opener against the Marlins. It’s unclear whether he’ll still undergo an MRI out of an abundance of caution, but it’s worth noting that initial X-rays didn’t reveal any fractures. Fantasy managers aren’t out of the woods just yet, but this is certainly an encouraging sign.

Gallen didn’t have his best stuff today, with his velocity down about one mph. He got just six misses on 36 swings over 87 pitches, and he gave up homers to Andrew Benintendi and Lenyn Sosa. The loss leaves him 5-9 with a 5.75 ERA. He has some company in having nine losses, but the other four pitchers with at least that many are all pitching for last-place teams. There’s always the chance Gallen will bounce back, but with his strikeout rate down and his walk rate up, he seems droppable in mixed leagues at this point. He’ll make his next start at home against the Giants.

Naylor left Monday’s game and was scratched Tuesday because of right shoulder soreness. The homer, which came off Sean Burke in the first inning, was his 10th of the year.

The well-traveled 30-year-old finally produced the game’s first run as he crushed a full-count offering from Ranger Suárez for a 390-foot (103.5 mph EV) solo shot in the eighth inning that proved to be the difference in the ballgame. Hummel also singled in the ballgame, accounting for two of the Astros’ five total hits. With his 2-for-3 night, he’s now hitting .222/.364/.556 with a pair of homers and three RBI in his limited big league action this season.

Steer had the middle of three singles as the Reds scored twice to win the game in the 11th. Gavin Lux delivered the actual game-winner off the bench. Steer has 12 hits in his last seven games, and his current .660 OPS is his high mark of the season. He’s still not hitting the ball hard enough to inspire much confidence — his xwOBA has actually been trending downwards — but at least he’s settling playing time concerns that could have arisen with Austin Hays nearly ready to come off the IL and Noelvi Marte not too far behind.
