Four straight two-hit games have elevated Clement’s average to .310. He was at .271 two weeks ago, but he’s since gone 22-for-45, albeit with just two RBI. His steal tonight was his third success in six attempts.

Piña was designated for assignment by the Marlins over the weekend after posting a 3.47 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and a 54/15 K/BB ratio in 57 innings at Triple-A Jacksonville. The Blue Jays view him as a potential bulk reliever option and organizational depth and will send him to Triple-A Buffalo to start. They parted with Colby Martin, who is a 24-year-old reliever in High-A and was not on the 40-man roster.

Springer crushed a Hunter Gaddis pitch 421 feet to center in the eighth. His other two hits were both soft singles, but the homer left his bat at 109.6 mph. Springer has spent most of his career leading off, so eight slams is pretty good. He has 11 homers this year and 272 in his career.

After completing five innings for the first time in his last start against the Diamondbacks, Lauer again had his longest outing of the season tonight, striking out five and walking three. He’ll be retaining his spot in the Toronto rotation with Max Scherzer back, though there’s a good chance he’ll wind up back in the pen at some point. He’ll make his next start Sunday in Boston.

After photos and videos of Scott Boras at the Red Sox series in Los Angeles were making the rounds earlier this week, it was revealed on the NESN broadcast that Boras was discussing a possible contract extension for Bregman with the Red Sox front office. The veteran third baseman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with Boston in the off-season that included a player opt-out after each of the first two seasons. The 31-year-old has not only played well in Boston but also emerged as a leader to the team’s litany of young prospects. Given that Boston said the trade of Rafael Devers was about creating a clubhouse that would benefit their young stars, keeping a veteran leader like Bregman around would seem to make some sense.

Burns struck out five of the first six batters tonight and faced just one over the minimum through three innings before giving up a leadoff homer to Ben Rice in the fourth. He later surrendered a two-run triple to Anthony Volpe, though it really should have been a single; Rece Hinds dove for a ball in right field that he had no chance of catching. Burns went without issuing a walk tonight. He got 12 whiffs: six on 48 fastballs and six on 24 sliders. His heated topped out at 100.1 mph and averaged 98.1 mph, which is right where he was at in Triple-A, too. All in all, it was a pretty impressive showing. He’ll make his next start in Fenway next week, probably in a matchup with Garrett Crochet.
