The homer off Kevin Gausman was wind-aided and would typically have been a flyout, but this just seems like it’s Suárez’s year. His 22nd homer still leaves him eight shy of last year’s mark, but it matches his total from 162 games with the Mariners in 2023. He’s second in the majors with 162 RBI, one behind Pete Alonso. His current pace would have him finishing with 136. Suárez does already have three 100-RBI seasons under his belt, but his career high is 104 from 2018. 2018 was also the year of his only All-Star appearance, something that figures to change in the coming weeks.

The only hit against him was Alejandro Kirk’s homer in the second. Nelson turned in a dud against the Reds two weeks ago, but he’s allowed one or no runs over at least five innings in his other four starts this season. The middling strikeout rate makes him look like a weak bet in shallow leagues, but he’s a decent play next week with the White Sox on the schedule.

The sac fly might have been a hit — it was unclear whether Jonathan Clase caught the sinking liner to center without it hitting the grass — but the D-backs declined to challenge it with a 9-1 lead. With Corbin Carroll out, Smith hit higher than sixth in the lineup for just the second time since mid-May; the only other time it happened was also with Carroll absent. Smith has an excellent .274/.394/.458 line for the season, but most of that production came in the first four weeks of the season.

Richards elected free agency last weekend instead of accepting an outright assignment from the Royals. He pitched just three innings in the big leagues for the Royals, posting a 12.00 ERA, 3.00 WHIP and a 2/2 K/BB ratio. He’ll add veteran help to a Diamondbacks’ bullpen that has been decimated by injuries this season.

Arenado singled in the automatic runner in the 10th, but he was retired while trying to take second base on the throw. The Cardinals still wound up getting an insurance run anyway, as Lars Nootbaar homered. Arenado’s homer, his ninth of the year, was a 385-footer to left-center that would have left 12 ballparks. No. 350 puts him into a tie with Chili Davis for 102nd on the all-time list. Next up are Dick Allen at 351 and Ryan Braun, Ellis Burks and Freddie Freeman at 352.

Smith will not start for a third consecutive game because of his hamstring tightness. The good news is Rangers manager Bruce Bochy told reporters that Smith will be available off the bench. Assuming no setbacks, there’s a very good chance that Smith will be back in the Texas starting nine by the end of the weekend.

The 23-year-old has now homered in back-to-back games and has 10 homers on the season to go along with a .276/.393/.470 slash line and 55 RBIs in 69 games. He’s the 44th-ranked prospect in all of baseball, according to MLB Pipeline, but there is no place for him in Los Angeles right now. Perhaps he’s used as a trade chip at the deadline to help the Dodgers’ injured rotation. If not, we likely won’t see him until 2026, unless there’s an injury.
