Rocchio is replacing the injured Gabriel Arias, but he was about due another shot anyway after hitting .252/.353/.484 with seven homers and seven steals in 41 games for Columbus. He’ll likely be the Guardians’ primary shortstop, possibly for the rest of the season.

Santana singled off of Matthew Boyd with two outs in the opening inning but was left stranded there. He then smacked a leadoff double into left field in the fourth inning and came around to score the Guardians’ first run on an RBI knock by Nolan Jones. With his two-hit attack, the switch-hitting 39-year-old is now hitting an underwhelming .237/.332/.362 with nine long balls, 37 RBI and four stolen bases.

Williams also issued four free passes on the night while striking out a pair of opposing hitters. The Cubs jumped on him for three runs in the second inning on an RBI knock by Michael Busch and a two-run single off the bat of Carson Kelly. They tacked on another as Seiya Suzuki clubbed a solo shot in the sixth inning. The 25-year-old hurler got eight whiffs on 96 pitches on the evening, posting a CSW of 22 percent. He’ll look to bounce back as he brings a 3.86 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and an 82/49 K/BB ratio (86 1/3 innings) into Sunday’s divisional showdown against the Tigers.

It looked for all the world that Arias broke his ankle when he caught a clea trying to slide in the outfield grass Sunday, but fortunately, it was just a bad sprain. He still figures to miss a considerable amount of time, but he could be back to contribute at some point during the second half. Arias was hitting .231/.293/.369 in 281 plate appearances.

Betts receives his first day off since June 2 with rookie Hyeseong Kim getting an opportunity to handle shortstop on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium. The 32-year-old fantasy star hasn’t exactly torn the cover off the ball in recent weeks, batting .240 (24-for-100) with just one homer and one steal in 25 games during the month of June.

That timetable doesn’t leave much time at all for Mateo to make it back this season. There’s a chance he’s ready to return in late August, but that would be a best-case scenario without any setbacks. The versatile 30-year-old suffered the injury last weekend while playing in a minor league rehab game for Triple-A Norfolk.

It’s a positive sign that Tovar is making some progress in his recovery from a left oblique strain that put him on the shelf back in early June. There’s a decent chance he’s back in Colorado’s lineup in the early stages of the second half.
