Bryant told reporters he’ll consult with doctors this week to explore experimental treatment options in an effort to avoid back surgery, which would likely be career-ending. The 33-year-old former NL MVP has been out since early April dealing with lumbar degenerative disease, a chronic condition that will require constant management for the rest of his playing career. At this point, it’s fair to wonder if he’s ever going to play again. We’re hoping that isn’t the case, but he’s not making any sort of progress towards returning this season.

There’s zero incentive for the Rockies to push things with just a handful of games left before the All-Star break. It’ll be rookie Yanquiel Fernández taking over in right field on Sunday in his place. Freeman has been one of the few bright spots of late in an otherwise dismal year for Colorado, emerging as a decent option for fantasy managers in deeper mixed leagues over the last few weeks, hitting .392 (38-for-97) with one homer and nine steals over his last 30 games. He’s presumably day-to-day heading into Monday’s series opener against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Doyle will sit out for the fourth time in the last five games as Colorado attempts to give him an extended mental break in an effort to let him clear his head and work on adjustments. The 27-year-old was one of last year’s biggest fantasy breakthrough’s, but he’s struggled this season to re-discover that form at the plate.

Well, that was fast. Jackson gets the call to join Baltimore’s catching mix just a few hours after being acquired from the Yankees in a small trade with Gary Sánchez hitting the injured list with a right knee sprain. The 29-year-old backstop has appeared in 124 games in the big leagues, mostly in a reserve role, since 2019.

Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino told reporters Sunday that Sánchez has been diagnosed with a moderate right PCL strain. It’ll be Alex Jackson, not top prospect Samuel Basallo, coming up to join Baltimore’s catching mix behind Jacob Stallings. It’s a perplexing situation, but clearly the Orioles want to keep Basallo in the minors and get through the All-Star break when it’s possible Adley Rutschman will be ready to return from the injured list.

Sánchez will sit out Sunday’s contest after making an early exit from Saturday’s tilt with right knee pain. The 32-year-old backstop figures to avoid the injured list for the moment. Jacob Stallings will handle the catching duties with David Bañuelos coming up to join the club’s taxi squad in case of an emergency.
