Cantillo is a starter by trade but opened this season in the Guardians’ bullpen and posted a 3.81 ERA over 28 1/3 innings in 21 appearances. He was sent down to Triple-A Columbus to get stretched back out as a starter. He has started four games and posted a 3.86 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and 15/4 K/BB. However, he has thrown just 11 2/3 innings and hasn’t made it out of the fourth inning in any of those. It seems like five innings might be the max we can expect from Cantillo early on, which keeps him off fantasy radars for now.

The Guardians needed to clear a spot on their active roster for some fresh arms that can cover multiple innings on Thursday and unfortunately Allard was the odd man out this time around. The 27-year-old left-hander posted a 2.55 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and a 16/8 K/BB ratio over 35 1/3 innings in 16 appearances with the Guardians. Given the overall lack of quality pitching depth around the league, he could attract interest on waivers.

The 25-year-old left-hander will start in place of Luis Ortiz on Thursday after the right-hander was placed on the restricted list. Cantillo has done a decent job out of the Guardians’ bullpen this season — posting a 3.81 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 36/14 K/BB ratio over 28 1/3 innings — before he was sent down at the end of May to get stretched back out as a starter. It’s unclear how many innings he’ll handle against the Cubs on Thursday but Doug Nikhazy was promoted as well to add some length to the Guardians’ bullpen.

The 25-year-old southpaw was hit hard in his lone appearance with the Guardians this season, giving up six runs on five hits over his three innings of work. He’ll provide length out of the team’s bullpen with Joey Cantillo starting in place of Luis Ortiz on Thursday evening.
