Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy told reporters Ortiz is taking a seat for the second straight game to help clean up some of his swing decisions. The 26-year-old shortstop is hitting .209/.269/.306 with six homers and nine steals in 87 games leading up to the All-Star break.

Hoskins was placed on the injured list on Monday after getting hurt because of a bad throw to first during Sunday’s game. Andrew Vaughn and Jake Bauers are filling in for him at first base.

Murphy had previously said he was “pissed” and wanted Ortiz to “give me his best approach at the plate every day... we’re playing him every day, and he just can’t have lapses at the plate like that.” Since June 1, Ortiz is hitting .263/.311/.424 with four home runs, 20 RBI, and four steals in 31 games. He also has a 16/6 K/BB ratio over that stretch, so the swing decisions don’t seem to be too egregious. Hopefully this doesn’t interrupt the rhythm he was creating at the plate.

Vaughn hit a ball 409 feet to left to make a spectacular first impression for his new team. He also walked and scored a second run before, oddly, being pinch-hit for by Jake Bauers with a righty on the mound in the seventh. (Oddly because Vaughn got the nod over Bauers against a righty in the first place.) The homer was Vaughn’s sixth in 49 major league games this season. He’ll definitely be back in there tomorrow with the Dodgers starting a lefty.

It sounds like Peña will be out through next week’s All-Star break — and miss the Midsummer Classic altogether — as he continues to recover from a fractured rib. At this point it doesn’t seem like he’ll make it back to Houston’s lineup until later this month.

Seager absolutely clobbered a two-run homer off Yusei Kikuchi to give the Angels a 2-0 lead in the first inning. He’s now up to a dozen homers in 2025 with 27 RBI over 59 games, and that roundtripper along with a single and a walk improves his slash to .250/.353/.455 in his 220 at-bats. All of those numbers have a good chance of improving over the second half of 2025.

Grissom is now hitting .274/.350/.432 on the season in Triple-A with eight home runs, eight steals, 32 RBI, and 53 runs scored in 76 games. He hit .279 in June and has now started July by going 7-for-18 with one home run, three RBI, and a 4/2 K/BB ratio. He can play second base and first base, and may be a better use of an infield spot for the Red Sox right now than David Hamilton.
