    Jorge Mateo

Jorge Mateo (elbow) will kick off a minor league rehab assignment on Wednesday with Triple-A Norfolk.

Mateo shouldn’t require more than a handful of rehab games before he’s ready to rejoin Baltimore’s bench mix. He’s been out since mid-June after an on-field collision led to inflammation in his surgically-repaired left elbow.

Tomoyuki Sugano will make his next start on Friday against the Rays.

The Orioles elected to scratch Sugano from Wednesday’s scheduled start against the Rangers, giving the ball to pitching prospect Brandon Young instead, in an effort to give the veteran righty some extra rest between outings. The 35-year-old is healthy and will get the ball for Friday’s series opener at Camden Yards.

Jordan Westburg (finger) is hitting second and playing third base against the Rangers on Wednesday.

Westburg makes his return after missing three straight contests with his finger injury. The 26-year-old should be returned to fantasy lineups, and Ramon Urias will begin Wednesday’s contest on the bench with Westburg finally able to to go again.

Orioles optioned RHP Yaramil Hiraldo to Triple-A Norfolk.

Hiraldo is sent down to make room for Brandon Young, with Young recalled from Norfolk to start Wednesday’s game against the Rangers. Hiraldo will likely be up and down throughout the 2025 campaign.

Zach Neto (shoulder) is out of the lineup against the Red Sox on Wednesday.

Neto jammed his shoulder while attempting to steal a base Tuesday, and he’ll begin Wednesday’s contest on the bench. Scott Kingery will handle shortstop and hit ninth. More information about the severity of Neto’s injury should be available shortly.

KPRC2’s Ari Alexander reports that the Astros and Jeremy Peña are “deep in contract extension discussions.”

Peña notably changed his representation on Monday and hired Scott Boras amid a career year that has seen him hit .326/.380/.493 with 11 home runs, 40 RBI, 47 runs and 15 steals in 78 games. Alexander reports that the deal would exceed $105 million over five years, which feels like a reasonable price to pay for a 27-year-old middle infielder who is continuing to get better. Time will tell if the Astros can get a deal across the finish line, but after choosing not to re-sign Alex Bregman and trading away Kyle Tucker, it makes sense to try and use that extra money to lock up their breakout shortstop.

    Injury

Zach Neto said he jammed his right shoulder on a stolen base attempt Tuesday and will undergo tests on Wednesday.

Neto stayed in initially after getting hurt, but he left the game after airmailing a throw afterwards. He’s optimistic he’ll be OK, but he wants tests for reassurance. If Neto needs an IL stint, Kyren Paris could take over as the Angels’ primary shortstop.
