Mateo shouldn’t require more than a handful of rehab games before he’s ready to rejoin Baltimore’s bench mix. He’s been out since mid-June after an on-field collision led to inflammation in his surgically-repaired left elbow.

The Orioles elected to scratch Sugano from Wednesday’s scheduled start against the Rangers, giving the ball to pitching prospect Brandon Young instead, in an effort to give the veteran righty some extra rest between outings. The 35-year-old is healthy and will get the ball for Friday’s series opener at Camden Yards.

Peña notably changed his representation on Monday and hired Scott Boras amid a career year that has seen him hit .326/.380/.493 with 11 home runs, 40 RBI, 47 runs and 15 steals in 78 games. Alexander reports that the deal would exceed $105 million over five years, which feels like a reasonable price to pay for a 27-year-old middle infielder who is continuing to get better. Time will tell if the Astros can get a deal across the finish line, but after choosing not to re-sign Alex Bregman and trading away Kyle Tucker, it makes sense to try and use that extra money to lock up their breakout shortstop.

Neto stayed in initially after getting hurt, but he left the game after airmailing a throw afterwards. He’s optimistic he’ll be OK, but he wants tests for reassurance. If Neto needs an IL stint, Kyren Paris could take over as the Angels’ primary shortstop.
