He also robbed what might have been a homer in the second inning, yet the Tigers still pinch-hit for him against a lefty with an 8-4 in the eighth. Carpenter has been pretty quiet since his three-homer game against the White Sox on June 2, going 10-for-59 with two homers and a 17/0 K/BB ratio. He’s never been much for walks, but his 60/7 K/BB in 277 plate appearances this season is atrocious. He finished at 75/22 in 296 plate appearances last year.

We figured McKinstry’s .627 OPS in May would be more representative of the rest of his season than his .888 mark from April, but he’s bounced back nicely this month, coming in at .938 so far. He also has seven steals after collecting only three over the first two months. His exit velocity numbers don’t entirely back up his success so far, but to date, he’s been one of the two best position players on one of baseball’s two best teams.

Byron Buxton’s two-run homer in the third was the only damage. Ryan Jeffers almost had a solo shot an inning earlier, but Kerry Carpenter made a leaping catch at the wall. Mize struck out five in spite of having only eight whiffs and a 21% CSW. He still hasn’t allowed more than four runs in a start this season, and he’s given up three earned only three times in 14 starts. He’ll probably make his next start Friday in Cleveland.

With the Tigers’ lineup finally healthy for the most part, you’re going to start seeing more days off for regulars in the lineup as manager A.J. Hinch attempts to work everybody in. Meadows has struggled since his return from the injured list, slashing a disappointing .181/.263/.319 with a pair of homers, seven RBI and two stolen bases in 80 plate appearances. Matt Vierling will start in Meadows’ place in center field on Saturday.

The 23-year-old outfielder has been shelved since June 25 due to appendicitis. He’ll remain there through the weekend before being re-evaluated. Walker is eligible to return from the injured list on Wednesday and it sounds like that’s when he could rejoin the Cardinals.

It was already 11-0 Phillies by the time Acuna was due for his second at-bat in the bottom of the third inning on Friday. The Braves decided to throw in the towel at that point and give the 27-year-old superstar outfielder the rest of the night off. Stuart Fairchild came off the bench and hit two doubles, which were the Braves’ only extra-base hits on the night. Acuna should be back in the lineup for Atlanta’s next game on Saturday.

The featured piece heading back to the Astros in the Kyle Tucker trade from this past offseason, Smith was sure to let his former team know what they were missing here. This was his first game against the team that drafted him and he was never retired. Instead, he broke this game open with a booming three-run home run that careened off the wall behind the left field stands in Daikin Park. While Smith got off to a slow start at the plate this season, he’s really turned a corner of late with an .832 OPS over his last 30 games. He’s proven he can hit for a high average – it’s over .300 since May 1st – just without much power to this point. If he can add that power, there could be a huge second half in store for the young right fielder.
