Tucker smacked a one-out double off of Chad Patrick in the fifth inning that set the stage for Seiya Suzuki’s go-ahead three-run blast. He also doubled in the first inning and singled in the third, but the Cubs were unable to cash him in either of those times. The 28-year-old superstar outfielder is now slashing a robust .284/.394/.515 with 13 homers, 43 RBI and 18 stolen bases in what has been a terrific first season with the Cubs thus far.

Suzuki turned a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 advantage with one mighty swing of the bat in the fifth inning, crushing a 1-0 sinker from Chad Patrick for a 413-foot (102.8 mph EV) three-run shot. He struck out in each of his three other at-bats on the night, but that’s fine as he still was able to play the role of hero. On the season, the 30-year-old slugger is slashing a healthy .261/.317/.536 with 18 homers, 61 RBI and a pair of stolen bases.

The 25-year-old hurler struck out Joey Ortiz and got Sal Frelick on a pop out to third base to open the ninth inning. He then allowed a two-out double to Jackson Chourio which brought the tying run to the plate, but Palencia rebounded to get William Contreras on a fly ball to center field to end it. He has done a terrific job for the Cubs this season, compiling a 1.67 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and a 29/10 K/BB ratio over 27 innings while converting seven of his first eight save chances. He has started to separate himself in the Cubs’ bullpen and should hang onto the closer’s gig even when Porter Hodge returns from the injured list, making him a viable target in any shallow mixed leagues where he may still be available.

The 25-year-old right-hander struck out five opposing hitters on the night while giving out a pair of free passes. All of the damage done against him came on a two-run blast off the bat of Isaac Collins in the second inning. Brown settled in nicely afterwards though, finishing his day with three scoreless frames which gave the Cubs’ offense a chance to come through for him. Brown got seven swings and misses on 86 pitches on the night — six of them on his knuckle curve — while posting a CSW of only 21 percent. He’ll look to keep the good times rolling as he carries a 5.57 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and an 88/25 K/BB ratio (74 1/3 innings) into Sunday’s tilt against the Mariners.

Cook joins the Pirates ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Marlins with Bryan Reynolds heading out on paternity leave for a couple days. It figures to be a short stint in the big leagues for the versatile 26-year-old, who got into 16 contests last year for Pittsburgh. He’s hit .271 with zero homers and 10 steals in 61 games this season at the Triple-A level.

Carpenter finds himself on the bench for the third straight contest with lefty Andrew Heaney taking the ball for Pittsburgh. He also took a seat with Bailey Falter toeing the rubber on Tuesday and Reds southpaw Wade Miley drawing Sunday’s starting assignment. It’ll be Wenceel Pérez handling right field for the third consecutive game.
