Nootbaar will open Wednesday night’s showdown on the bench with crafty southpaw Matthew Boyd toeing the rubber at Busch Stadium. The 27-year-old outfielder has been in a groove at the dish recently, hitting .280 (7-for-25) with three homers over his last seven games. It’ll be Brendan Donovan heading out to cover left field in this one with talented rookie Thomas Saggese getting a chance at the keystone.

With the Cubs starting left-hander Shota Imanaga, Nootbaar will not be in the starting lineup. This is now the third straight game against a lefty where Nootbaar has been on the bench. With Thomas Saggese now on the active roster, the Cardinals can start him at second base against lefties and move Brendan Donovan to left field. A strong side platoon role would further diminish Nootbaar’s fantasy value in a year that has not quite gone according to plans.

Fedde never settled into this one. Ian Happ took him deep on the first pitch of the game, then the Cubs rallied for three more in the second, Kyle Tucker hit a long home run to start the third, and he was pulled in the fourth with two runs already home and the bases loaded. Overall, he allowed 12 hard-hit balls while forcing just four swings-and-misses. It’s difficult to have a start much worse than this one. He’s scheduled to face the Pirates and these same Cubs in a two-start week coming up.

Happ set the tone in this one with a home run on the first pitch of the game off Erick Fedde. That opened the floodgates for what would turn into seven runs through the first four innings. Happ concluded that barrage as well with a two-run single in the fourth that effectively ended Fedde’s night. While never flashy, he’s been his usual solid and steady self this season with 12 home runs, 51 runs scored, 41 RBI, and a .763 OPS out of the lead-off spot for this high-powered Cubs’ lineup.

This was a huge game for Domínguez. He reached base in three separate innings where the Yankees scored and notched three hard-hit balls in total. Playing time could get scarce between the Yankees corner outfield, first base, and designated hitter options with Giancarlo Stanton back in the fold, so this big game by Domínguez feels even better given the context.

Ward is still getting his homers, but his average is back down to .208 now. In his last 30 games, he’s at .178 with just one multihit game in the span. Heck, he has only 11 multhit affairs in 78 games this season. Ronald Acuña Jr. has 13 in 29 games since returning from a torn ACL.
