A home series versus the Rockies was just what Boston’s pitching staff needed. Of course, Giolito was already throwing well coming into this one, and he’s now 6-1 with a 3.36 ERA. The Red Sox should try to capitalize and send him to an actual contender before the deadline, though this recent stretch against weak clubs might convince them they still have a shot. Giolito will probably start Boston’s first game after the break against the Cubs.

Houck struck out six and walked two on the day while throwing 61 percent of his pitches for strikes and posting a 39 percent whiff rate and 33 percent CSW. Despite a report of him hitting 101 mph on the radar gun, Houck sat 96 mph with his sinker and four-seam fastball. With Richard Fitts and Hunter Dobbins pitching well, there is no immediate spot in the rotation for Houck, but his stuff could play up in a bullpen role, possibly a long relief role for the second half.

It wasn’t clear if Duran would play tonight after the Red Sox said Masataka Yoshida would DH and Roman Anthony would start in left, but Duran got the call over Ceddanne Rafaela in center. That’s not an alignment that should continue, but it seems like they’re going to be sensible enough to keep playing Duran against righties. He’s 11-for-30 with seven extra-base hits and 11 RBI in eight games this month, and he’s hitting .289/.358/.498 against righties for the year.

Gonzalez’s homer off Seth Halvorsen was hit 368 feet to left. He earlier had a 409-foot flyout that would have been a homer in 20 ballparks. This was Boston’s first game with Gonzalez in the lineup and Abraham Toro out of it against a right-hander since Gonzalez came off the IL on June 2, so perhaps the tide is starting to turn. Gonzalez will be of interest in mixed leagues if the Red Sox start to play him regularly. He’s batting an incredible .338/.372/.603 in 148 plate appearances.
