He gave up just one hit, a Vinnie Pasquantino solo shot in the fourth. Ortiz very nearly threw away his spot in the Guardians rotation with a 10.13 ERA and 14 walks allowed in 18 2/3 innings this spring, and he had an 8.44 ERA through his first two regular-season starts, so he definitely needed this. He’ll still need to do it a couple of more times before he’ll again be someone to consider in mixed leagues. He’s due to face his old teammates in Pittsburgh next time out.

As a team, the Guardians were only able to muster four hits (all singles) and one walk against Emerson Hancock and company. Thomas was the only member of the Guardians to reach base twice — with a two-out single off of Hancock in the second and a one-out walk off of the right-hander in the fifth inning. The 29-year-old outfielder has been swinging a hot bat since returning from the injured list and makes for an intriguing addition in deeper mixed leagues where he may still be available.

Ortiz struggled with his command in this one, issuing five free passes while striking out five batters on the afternoon. Most of the damage came during a five-run uprising in the second inning that was capped off by a grand slam off the bat of J.P. Crawford. The M’s added another run in the fifth in an RBI knock by Mitch Garver. Ortiz got 12 swings and misses on 104 pitches on the day, registering a CSW of 31 percent. He’ll try to put this one behind him and get back on track as he carries a 4.64 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and an 81/39 K/BB ratio (75 2/3 innings) into Saturday’s showdown against the Athletics in West Sacramento.

Bibee allowed just two hard-hit balls tonight, but the Mariners managed to scrape together two runs in the first and that was enough to leave Bibee with a no-decision. He’ll bring a 3.79 ERA into his next start against the A’s.
