The Mariners are bringing Taylor back to the majors even though he allowed six runs over 3 1/3 innings of relief work on his rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma. It might be a short stay, since the team will need a fifth starter on Saturday, and the decision on who gets to remain with the team will probably come down to him and Casey Legumina. Taylor, who had been out with a strained lat, is very much part of the Mariners’ plans going forward, but he doesn’t seem to be quite at his best right now.

Gilbert returns from the first-ever injured list stint of his career to take the ball for Monday’s series opener against a new-look Red Sox lineup without slugger Rafael Devers. The 28-year-old fantasy ace wound up missing just over seven weeks with a flexor strain in his right elbow. He shouldn’t have any restrictions from a workload or pitch count standpoint after throwing 72 pitches last week in his final rehab outing for Triple-A Tacoma.

Kowar returns to the minors to free up a spot on Seattle’s roster for ace Logan Gilbert to return from the injured list. The 28-year-old righty allowed just two runs over 8 2/3 innings (seven appearances) during a brief stint with the club dating back to May 28.

Crawford broke the game open in the second inning as he crushed a 1-2 slider from Luis Ortiz for a 377-foot (99.0 mph EV) grand slam to right field that increased the M’s advantage to 5-0. That would be his only hit on the afternoon but was more than enough to support Emerson Hancock and company. On the season, the 30-year-old shortstop is now hitting .296/.411/.413 with six homers and 29 RBI.
