It’s unfortunate that this comes so soon after the three-error inning, but Simon wasn’t long for the majors regardless. It’s just a little surprising that he’s being DFA’d in favor of Jack Winkler instead of simply being sent down once Xavier Edwards returns. Simon, 25, hit .234/.327/.277 in 56 plate appearances for the Marlins.

We assume Myers will return as the primary center fielder, though he has some new competition there in the form of Victor Mesa Jr. Both should play plenty, though. Myers hit .337/.375/.482 in 29 games before going on the IL with an oblique strain, so he definitely deserves to be in the lineup as often as he can handle.

Mervis had an option remaining, but the Marlins will either trade him or expose him to waivers. We’re not sure anyone will be eager to add him. He did have seven homers in 134 plate appearances, good for second place on the ballclub, but he hit just .175/.254/.383 with 50 strikeouts and unimpressive exit velocity numbers. He seems like a Triple-A guy right now. The Marlins will likely use Eric Wagaman at first now, since he was about to lose outfield playing time with Dane Myers back.

Winkler, a former A’s prospect, is in the majors for the first time. He hit .275/.331/.423 with 15 steals in 15 attempts for Jacksonville, which is a step up from what he typically hit in the A’s system. Still, he’s probably a 26th man at best, and he could return to the minors when Xavier Edwards is activated.

It was 11-0 until; the ninth, when the Dodgers tried to save a little wear on their pitchers by putting in Enrique Hernández for the final inning. Hernández, though, gave up a grand slam and five runs while getting two outs, and Anthony Banda ended up finishing the game. Ohtani has 25 homers this year, leaving him one behind Aaron Judge and Cal Raleigh for the MLB lead. He’s up to 250 career homers in 929 games since debuting in 2018.

Trout put the Angels on the board early in this one, taking Tomoyuki Sugano deep for a two-run homer in the first inning. He then drew a pair of walks in the contest. The home run was his second since returning from the injured list on May 30. The 33-year-old outfielder is hitting .226/.313/.465 with 11 homers and 27 RBI across 179 plate appearances.

Helfand reports that the strain is on the “milder” side, but not so mild that it won’t require another stint on the injured list for Lewis. The 26-year-old could return by the end of June or start of July if there are no setbacks, but a more concrete timeline should be provided in the coming days.
