    Matt Olson

    Matt Olson

    ATL • 1B • #

Matt Olson doubled twice, drove in three runs and walked twice Thursday as the Braves downed the Mets 7-1.

That’s a sweep for Atlanta. Olson’s bases-loaded double broke the game open in the sixth. He’s batting .321/.451/.607 with three homers and 17 RBI in 71 plate appearances during the month of June, and his current .850 OPS is his highest mark since the second game of the season.

Braves designated RHP José Ruiz for assignment.

The Braves needed to clear up spots on both their active and 40-man rosters for the arrival of Didier Fuentes on Thursday and it looks like Ruiz drew the short straw this time around. The 30-year-old hurler posted an 8.82 ERA, 1.96 WHIP and a 15/9 K/BB ratio over 16 1/3 innings in 18 appearances with the Braves.

    Spencer Strider

    Recap

Spencer Strider yielded one run in six innings and fanned eight in defeating the Mets on Thursday.

As a considerably more difficult assignment, this rates as an excellent followup to his 13-strikeout gem against the Rockies. Strider topped out at 98.4 mph and averaged 96.0 mph with his fastball tonight, a slight improvement over his season mark of 95.3 mph. Strider opened up 0-5 with a 5.40 ERA, but these last two outings have been strong enough to already drop his ERA to 3.89. Expectations are that he and Clay Holmes will face off again, this time in Queens, next Wednesday.

    Recap

Chris Sale scattered five hits and one walk across 8 2/3 shutout innings with strikeouts en route to an impressive 5-0 win over the Mets on Wednesday.

Sale clearly had plenty in the tank pitching on eight days’ rest and made the Mets feel his wrath. They hit dribbler after dribbler and didn’t put a single runner into scoring position after the first inning. Sale had no fear attacking them with fastballs in the zone which set up dozens of devastating sliders darting low. It was pure domination. The only reason he wasn’t able to finish the complete game shutout is because Brandon Nimmo hit a flare over Austin Riley’s head with two outs in the ninth inning and manager Brian Snitker didn’t want to push Sale when he’d already amassed a season-high 116 pitches. He hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in a single start since April 13th and has reclaimed his throne as one of the league’s best. If the Braves keep him on regular rest, he’s lined up for a two-start week against the Mets, again, and Phillies.

    Recap

Willson Contreras launched a game-tying two-run homer in the eighth inning, powering the Cardinals to a 5-4 comeback win over the White Sox during the opening contest of Thursday’s doubleheader.

Contreras kicked off the scoring with a first-inning sacrifice fly against White Sox starter Sean Burke before taking lefty reliever Cam Booser deep for a game-tying blast — his 10th round-tripper of the season — in the eighth. The 33-year-old former catcher turned first baseman has graded out as an elite, top-five range backstop for fantasy purposes this season, hitting .249/.338/.421 with 36 runs scored, 10 homers, 48 RBI and three steals through 70 contests.

    Paul Goldschmidt

    Recap

Paul Goldschmidt collected his eighth homer and 15th double of the year Thursday against the Angels.

Both off southpaw Tyler Anderson. Goldschmidt now has a 1.252 OPS against lefties, compared to a .647 mark against righties. The Orioles are throwing all righties this weekend, so it will be interesting to see how many games he starts. Manager Aaron Boone said Goldschmidt will not be platooned, but Goldschmidt was out of the lineup in favor of Ben Rice the last two times the Yankees faced right-handers.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand is starting at first base and batting seventh for the Reds on Thursday against the Twins.

Encarnacion-Strand has progressively moved lower in the batting order since his return from the IL. He got off to a tremendous start in his first weekend back, but has gone just 3-for-25 since then. With Jeimer Candelario also nearing his return from the IL, Encarnacion-Strand is going to need to turn it around soon before he risks losing more playing time.
