Matt Wallner went 2-for-3 with a solo home run on Wednesday against the Cubs.

Wallner made Cade Horton pay for a two-strike sweeper in the fourth inning that caught way too much of the plate for a loud solo home run that left the bat at 113 mph. That wound up being the last run scored in what became an impressive showing by both bullpens. He missed a chunk of the season due to injury, but this was Wallner’s first multi-hit game since April 16 as he tries to get going before the All-Star break.

Byron Buxton (hand) returned to the Twins’ starting lineup for Friday night’s showdown against Paul Skenes and the Pirates.

Buxton was pulled from Wednesday’s contest after he was drilled by a pitch on his left hand. Fortunately, X-rays came back for any fractures though and after a day off on Thursday he’s ready to return to his regular spot atop the Pirates’ lineup on Friday evening. The All-Star outfielder is slashing a terrific .270/.338/.544 with 20 homers, 53 RBI and 17 stolen bases (in 17 attempts) through his first 75 games this season.

Chris Paddack was tagged for six runs and 11 hits in five innings by the Cubs on Thursday.

Paddack wasn’t hit particularly hard, but he was still overwhelmed by all of the contact in a start in which he finished with just two strikeouts. He has an 8.47 ERA in his last six starts, taking his season mark from 3.53 to 4.95. He’ll probably stay in the rotation to begin the second half, but the ice has to be pretty thin at this point.

Trevor Larnach finished 0-for-4 with two strikeouts against the Cubs on Thursday.

Larnach is 7-for-38 with no RBI and a 12/1 K/BB in his last 11 games. It’s not going to get him pulled from the lineup, but maybe he’ll be dropped for a bit. The problem for the Twins is that their lineup is really just Byron Buxton and a whole bunch of guys who should be batting sixth, and they didn’t even have Buxton today.

Astros transferred OF Zach Dezenzo to the 60-day injured list.

Nothing has changed in the prognosis for the 25-year-old slugger, this was done as a procedural move to free up a spot on the team’s 40-man roster for the addition of Brice Matthews on Friday. Dezenzo is currently pain free as he continues to recover from a capsule sprain in his left hand. He has yet to resume hitting yet and will require a minor league rehab assignment once he’s ready for live action. He now won’t be eligible to rejoin the Astros until early August.
