The Cubs scored in each of the first five innings for Boyd as he cruised to a victory here. Cruised is the operative word here, as he forced just six swings-and-misses but tons of lazy pop-ups. Just two batters reached scoring position in one of the easiest outings you’ll ever see. He’s lined up for a two-start week coming up against the Guardians and these same Cardinals again with both starts at home.

The 109.6-mph liner to right in the second innings was Busch’s first ever homer in Busch Stadium. He later added a 106.3-mph single off Andre Pallante. Busch isn’t going to be an NL All-Star unless a couple of first basemen drop out, but he does have the numbers; he’s batting .311/.386/.608 with six homers in June, elevating his season OPS to .869.

Imanage allowed just two hard-hit balls, both coming on the six sweepers he threw this afternoon. His 46 fastballs produced five outs and 27 strikes, with 19 of those coming on foul balls, and he struck out three. Imanaga, who had been out since early May with a hamstring strain, moved to 4-2 with a 2.54 ERA on the season. He’ll face the Guardians next time out.

Things got a little heated afterwards, as Palencia was feeling very celebratory and former Cub Willson Contreras, who was on base because of a HBP, took some issue with the proceedings. Palencia notched his eighth save in nine tries. Until he gives the Cubs reason to make a change, he should continue to close over Porter Hodge and company.
