It doesn’t sound like it’s a first for Scherzer as he deals with his thumb problem, and he expects to make his next start. Scherzer was pulled from Monday’s game against the Yankees after 71 pitches. He’d allowed two runs over five innings and struck out seven.

It’s his first career seven-RBI game. He’d had six just once before, that coming against the Yankees in a two-homer game almost exactly a year ago (June 27, 2024). He now has 26 career multihomer games. Springer seemed to be in obvious decline over the past couple of years and looked particularly bad this spring, but he’s back performing at an All-Star level now, batting .270/.367/.486 with 13 homers and nine steals in nine tries.

The runs came on two singles and two walks in the first. Gausman kept the Yankees scoreless afterwards, but he never seemed all that comfortable in throwing 99 pitches to get 15 outs and finishing with more walks (four) than strikeouts (three). Regardless, he improved to 7-6 with a 4.18 ERA ahead of a start Sunday against the Angels.

The homer off Max Fried was his first against a lefty this season. It was also a rare center field blast for a guy who typically has to pull the ball to get it over the fence. Gimenez, who came into the day right on the Mendoza Line (40-for-200 this season), is now batting .207/.293/.315.
