Martinez has been utilized in relief during previous years, so the move doesn’t come as a total shock. The 34-year-old veteran was lit up for seven runs over 2 2/3 innings on Thursday in an abbreviated outing against the Twins. It doesn’t sound like the Reds are making a swap in their rotation, but it’s a situation to monitor.

Petty is an illustrative example of the significant gap between Triple-A and the big leagues at the moment as he’s consistently dominated on the doorstep of the majors with a 2.76 ERA and 26.9 percent strikeout rate this season, while getting absolutely torched in a pair of spot starts for the Reds.
