Yikes. Flaherty also issued three free passes while striking out three batters on the night. The Rays jumped on him early and often in this one, as Yandy Diaz blasted a leadoff home run to spark a four-run rally in the opening inning. After navigating a scoreless second, the Rays went right back to work in the third inning as Taylor Walls smacked a three-run double that mercifully chased Flaherty from the game. He now holds an uninspiring 4.83 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and a 93/31 K/BB ratio across 78 1/3 innings on the season. Heโll try to pick up the pieces on Thursday when he takes on the Athletics.

Smith was with the team as the 27th man for Thursdayโs doubleheader against the Pirates, but heโll stick around as an extra bullpen arm with Keider Montero getting optioned to Triple-A instead. Heโll give manager A.J. Hinch another weapon to deploy in the middle innings.

Montero was terrific in a no-decision against the Pirates during the second game of Thursdayโs doubleheader, giving up just one run on three hits over five innings. The Tigers needed a fresh arm for their bullpen on Friday which is why Montero was sent down. Expect him to return in short order the next time the team requires an extra starter.

It sounds like a precautionary decision to give Larnach some extra time off amid a 1-for-10 stretch during a three-game set against the Rangers. The 28-year-old corner outfielder figures to get back in there for the Twins at some point this weekend.
