The Red Sox designated Penrod for assignment Sunday, and it’s not a big surprise that a team had interest in picking up his services. The 28-year-old will give the Dodgers some bullpen help, and likely won’t cost the team more than a low-level prospect or cash considerations.

While he’ll also see action at second base and in center field, it sounds like the Red Sox want him to become an actual option at first base before he rejoins the big league roster. He also has to get his offensive game back on track as the 22-year-old was slashing an atrocious .159/.243/.222 since the calendar flipped to May.

Abreu is back after missing just a little over the minimum 10-day stint with his left oblique strain. The outfielder takes Kristian Campbell’s roster spot, and should be in the lineup everyday against right-handed pitchers.

As expected, Campbell is down after scuffling mightily since the start of May. The 22-year-old will get a chance to work on some things in Triple-A, and he’ll be replaced on the active roster by Wilyer Abreu with Abreu coming off the injured list as the corresponding transaction.
