Both events happened after play resumed today. Steer’s homer was a high fly to left that bounced off the top of the Green Monster. Statcast said it would have been a homer in 12 ballparks. The HBP afterwards was not a matter of retaliation, but Steer starting to swing at a fastball tailing in and taking it off the hand. He was checked by the trainer but was able to finish the game.

The Reds were down 3-0 in the seventh when CES hit his sixth homer of the year with the bases loaded against Greg Weissert. The no-doubter left his bat at 109.1 mph and was projected at 439 feet. Encarnacion-Strand wasn’t even supposed to play tonight; he hurt his foot during the completion of last night’s suspended game this afternoon, but he was needed after Spencer Steer was scratched. The big game is very well timed for him, as the Reds infield is close to getting quite a bit more crowded with Noelvi Marte’s expected return from the IL.

Coming off his near no-no, Martinez was knocked around pretty good in this one, giving up a homer, four doubles and four singles while getting just two strikeouts. He also got an out on a Jarren Duran fly to right that would have been a homer in 25 ballparks, according to Statcast. Still, the Red Sox made some baserunning mistakes and finished the night just 1-for-9 with RISP, and Martinez held on long enough to get the win after the Reds scored five times in the seventh inning. He moves to 6-8 with a 4.05 ERA ahead of a start against the Marlins next week.

Cincinnati ultimately decided not to take any chances after Steer was hit by a pitch on the right hand during the opening contest of Wednesday’s twin bill at Fenway Park. Ironically, he’s been replaced at first base by Christian Encarnacion-Strand, who was originally sitting out after fouling a ball off his foot earlier in the day. The 27-year-old first baseman has been diagnosed with merely a contusion, so it doesn’t appear that he’s dealing with any fractures after initial X-rays came back negative. Fantasy managers should keep an eye on his status heading into Friday’s series opener against the Phillies.

MassLive’s Chris Cotillo reported that the “Red Sox are planning to get Yoshida some ‘light work’ pregame at first base during his rehab assignment.” The team is not switching his position and still views Yoshida as an outfielder or designated hitter. Still, while he’s with Worcester, they are seeing how he responds to the new position to see if it gives him added versatility. Considering Yoshida is just 5'8" and has not played first base before, we would imagine it’s a long shot that he’d get into a game at the position.

Suzuki was an unstoppable force in this one. He started the Cubs’ comeback with a run-scoring double in the third and gave them the lead with a single the following inning. While a bit overshadowed by superstar teammates Kyle Tucker and Pete Crow-Armstrong, Suzuki is in the midst of an incredible season with 23 home runs and an .869 OPS as we near the All-Star break.

Stanton hit a ball 415 feet off Berríos in the fifth. It was his 430th career homer, leaving him one behind Cal Ripken Jr. for 50th place all-time. Stanton also had a walk tonight, leaving him at .244/.346/.333 in 13 games since returning from his elbow injuries.
