    Spencer Torkelson

    DET • 1B • #

Spencer Torkelson is not in the Tigers’ starting lineup for Saturday afternoon’s showdown against the Reds.

The 25-year-old slugger has cooled considerably over the past few weeks, slashing .209/.320/.372 with two homers, five RBI and a 12/6 K/BB ratio over 50 plate appearances in his last 12 games. Colt Keith will start in his place at first base and will bat sixth for the Tigers against Reds’ right-hander Brady Singer on Saturday afternoon at Comerica Park.

    Recap

Jack Flaherty was tagged for three homers and seven runs in 4 2/3 innings by the Reds on Saturday.

Flaherty opened with three scoreless frames today before giving up a solo homer to Elly De La Cruz in the fourth and a grand slam to Tyler Stephenson as part of a six-run fifth. Spencer Steer also took him deep in the inning. Coming into this one, Flaherty had allowed a total of two homers and six runs in his previous five starts combined. He also walked five today, topping his previous season high by two. The loss took his ERA from 3.41 to 4.03. He’ll try to shake it off before taking on the Rays next week.

    Recap

Javier Báez was able to finish Saturday’s game in spite of an apparent shoulder injury suffered on a slide into home in the third inning.

Báez, who was out on the play, tried a swim move with his left shoulder and seemed to be in pain afterwards, but he came out for the fourth and finished the game, even as the Reds turned it into an 11-1 blowout. Odds are this will prove to be nothing, but it seemed worth a mention anyway. Báez went 0-for-3 with a walk in the contest.

Riley Greene homered, doubled and drove in four runs on Friday night, leading the Tigers to an 11-5 victory over the Reds on a rainy evening in Motown.

Greene swatted a 426-foot (111.1 mph EV) solo shot off of Nick Martinez that gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead in the third inning. He then broke the game open with a bases-clearing three-run double off of Taylor Rogers in the sixth inning that made it a 7-2 ballgame. Greene finished the night 2-for-5. He has been a rock in the middle of the Tigers’ lineup this season, slashing .279/.334/.498 with 14 homers, 48 RBI and one stolen base.

Spencer Horwitz is not in the Pirates’ starting lineup for Saturday’s matchup against the Cubs.

He’ll take a seat with left-hander Matthew Boyd getting the ball for the Cubs in this one. The 27-year-old is hitting just .214/.290/.321 with one homer, six RBI and a 24/8 K/BB ratio over 93 plate appearances since his return from the injured list. Jared Triolo will start in his place at first base and bat seventh for the Pirates on Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand is absent from the Reds’ starting lineup for Saturday afternoon’s tilt against the Tigers in Motown.

It looks to be just a routine day off for the 25-year-old first baseman who has slashed an impressive .310/.344/.655 with three homers and seven RBI in seven games since returning from the injured list. Spencer Steer will start in his place at first base and will bat sixth for the Reds against Jack Flaherty and the Tigers on Saturday.

    Rowdy Tellez

    Recap

Rowdy Tellez smashed a solo homer in a win over the Guardians on Friday while adding a double.

Tellez got the Mariners on the board with a solo homer off Gavin Williams in the fourth inning. It’s the 11th roundtripper of the season for the veteran first baseman, and his double was just his fifth. Tellez certainly has the raw power to hit the ball over the fence, but it’s hard to trust him as a one-tool player playing in a home park that suppresses that tool.
