The Red Sox are up 2-1 after three innings in this one, so Bello will have a much-better-than-usual chance of getting a victory. With six innings to go in the game, this makes a lot of sense for the Red Sox, especially since they’re only permitted to call up a 27th man for the nightcap. They could turn to Kyle Harrison then, since he last pitched for Triple-A Worcester on Thursday.

Kelly’s option to Triple-A Worcester was rescinded, and instead he’ll be placed on the shelf for the next couple of weeks. He could be back in the Boston bullpen shortly after the All-Star break.

Story hadn’t had a four-hit game since Aug. 13, 2023. He’s 13-for-24 with two homers and 10 RBI in his last six games, raising his OPS to .697. He was at .591 on this day a month ago, and he hasn’t been over .700 since May 3. He’s also now 14-for-14 stealing bases. Byron Buxton, at 15-for-15, is the only other player with as many steals and zero failures.

It was Giolito’s first time pitching into the eighth since Aug. 9, 2021. Since giving up seven runs in 1 2/3 innings on June 4, taking his ERA to 6.42, he’s allowed a total of three earned runs over 32 2/3 innings in five starts. He’s now 5-1 with a 3.66 ERA through 12 starts, and he looks like a nice option next week in a home start against the Rockies.
