It’ll be pitching prospect Brandon Young coming up from Triple-A Norfolk to make a spot start in his place. Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino told reporters Sugano is healthy, but the club wants to give him some extra rest after pitching in a six-man rotation throughout his career in Japan. He’ll presumably be ready to take the ball for Friday’s series opener against the Rays.

Morton left down 3-0 before the Orioles’ comeback in the seventh. The runs came in the fourth and were all earned, though it would have been a scoreless frame on better defense. Gary Sánchez botched a play at home plate that could have been the first out, and then with runners and second and third, the Orioles got no outs on an easy grounder to Gunnar Henderson, who made an awful throw home on a fielder’s choice. Morton allowed just one hit outside of the fourth. He’ll almost certainly face the Rangers again next time out, but it could be at any point in next week’s series that runs from Monday to Wednesday.

It appeared that the Orioles pulled him for defense, as he’s still learning the finer points of playing first base. Mayo is 10-for-47 with no homers and four doubles in 15 games since being recalled from Triple-A on May 31. One can still dream of him offering mixed-league value at some point during the second half, but it’s not happening right now.

Stallings provides Baltimore with some experienced emergency catching depth while Adley Rutschman (oblique) and Maverick Handley (concussion) are on the injured list. The 35-year-old veteran backstop was cut loose earlier this month by the Rockies after hitting .143 (12-for-84) over 28 games this season. He’s appeared in 561 contests in the big leagues dating back to 2016.
