    TOR • 1B • #

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI against the Phillies on Saturday.

Guerrero knocked a base hit in the third inning, then drove in one of Toronto’s two runs with a double in the fifth. He delivered two of the Blue Jays five hits as the lineup was quieted by Cristopher Sánchez. The 26-year-old first baseman is slashing .278/.380/.421 with eight homers, 41 runs scored, and 31 RBI across 305 plate appearances.

    Recap

Bowden Francis allowed two runs with four strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Angels on Saturday.

Francis got through three quiet innings against the Phillies before unraveling in the fourth, walking three batters and hitting two more to bring two runs in without a hit. He’d leave with two outs and the bases loaded at 74 pitches and four strikeouts. The 29-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 6.05 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, and a 54/27 K/BB ratio across 64 innings. He’ll take on the White Sox in Toronto on Friday.

Blue Jays’ manager John Schneider told reporters on Saturday that Anthony Santander (shoulder) has yet to be cleared to resume hitting.

The 30-year-old outfielder has been shelved since the end of May due to inflammation in his left shoulder. He has been limited to just light throwing drills since that time, so it sounds like once he is ready to resume hitting it’s going to take him a while to build back up and he’ll probably require a minor league rehab assignment as well.

Max Scherzer (thumb) will make another minor league rehab start at Triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday.

The 40-year-old right-hander came out of Friday’s rehab outing feeling good and experienced only normal fatigue from the start after throwing 56 pitches. He’ll throw a side session on Sunday before rejoining the Bisons for another start on Wednesday. If all goes well with that one, he could then get clearance to return to the Blue Jays’ rotation.

    Recap

Willson Contreras homered and was hit by a pitch Saturday in an eventful game against the Brewers.

The Brewers targeted Contreras after what must have been a brain fart caused him to back into the running lane while Caleb Durbin was coming down the line. The 5-foot-7 Durbin ran into Contreras’s backside and went flying, but he wasn’t seriously hurt and was able to stay in the game. It also probably didn’t help that Rhys Hoskins was hit by a pitch afterwards. Jose Quintana plunked Contreras in the upper arm in his next at-bat, at which point Contreras, who seemed fine with the whole thing, retrieved the ball and handed it back to the pitcher. Also fun: both William and Willson wound up trading solo homers in the ninth inning today, making it the first time the brothers have homered in the same game.

    Spencer Horwitz

Spencer Horwitz is not in the Pirates’ starting lineup for Saturday’s matchup against the Cubs.

He’ll take a seat with left-hander Matthew Boyd getting the ball for the Cubs in this one. The 27-year-old is hitting just .214/.290/.321 with one homer, six RBI and a 24/8 K/BB ratio over 93 plate appearances since his return from the injured list. Jared Triolo will start in his place at first base and bat seventh for the Pirates on Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand is absent from the Reds’ starting lineup for Saturday afternoon’s tilt against the Tigers in Motown.

It looks to be just a routine day off for the 25-year-old first baseman who has slashed an impressive .310/.344/.655 with three homers and seven RBI in seven games since returning from the injured list. Spencer Steer will start in his place at first base and will bat sixth for the Reds against Jack Flaherty and the Tigers on Saturday.
